Hawaii State Science & Engineering Fair

The Science Fair is an enrichment program which stimulates interest in science and engineering and encourages entry into a science related career. Excellence of student achievement is recognized and rewarded. Students have the opportunity to interact personally with professional scientists and engineers in the program. Exhibits at school, district, and state levels serve to educate the public about science and engineering.
The Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair (HSSEF) is the oldest and largest science education program in Hawaii and continues to enjoy the support of the scientific, business, and education communities in the state. Over 6,000 students participate in the science fair program each year, with 375 - 475 reaching the HSSEF.

Over one hundred agencies join the Hawaii Academy of Science in giving awards that include cash and scholarships, trophies, medals, certificates, journals and books. Around two hundred scientists recruited by the Academy serve as judges. An additional 60 to 75 judges from the agencies also judge projects. The exhibits are viewed by more than 5,000 people.

Every student who participates in the HSSEF receives a Certificate and a State Science Fair Pin from the Hawaii Academy of Science. The two top Senior Research projects at the HSSEF are awarded trips to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). An outstanding team project may also be recommended from the HSSEF to compete at the ISEF. Students already registered for the ISEF from a district fair are not eligible for these trips to ISEF. The other top awards at the HSSEF includes the best projects in the Senior Research, Junior Research, and Junior Display divisions.

An outstanding science teacher is nominated to attend the Intel ISEF each year. Preference is given to science teachers who have participated in the Science Fair program in recent years.

The Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair is truly a collaborative effort of the educational, scientific and business communities throughout the state.
