Computer Capabilities

The Academy has built one of the most technologically advanced high schools in the country maintaining wireless internet access campus-wide, providing each student with a laptop or tablet computers upon entry, and equipping each classroom with SMART Boards (wall mounted, touch screen computers). Students interested in technology explore television and movie production, Java programming, and computer graphics and design. In science classes, for instance, digital microscopes allow students to view their slides on a laptop screen. From the laptop, the image can be sent to the SMART Board, which teachers can use as an electronic writing board. The image, with the teacher's handwritten explanation or diagram, is saved to the Academy's network and accessed later by students for homework or test preparation. This same technology assists students studying ancient texts in Jewish history, Rabbinics, and Hebrew classes.

Mission Statement

The American Hebrew Academy was established to provide an outstanding co educational college preparatory program and Jewish secondary education to intellectually motivated and academically able students who are prepared to engage in the rigorous discipline of its dual curriculum.

The Academy seeks to educate the whole student, mind, body and soul. The curriculum combines humanities and the arts, natural sciences and mathematics, social sciences, technology, physical education and sports. It incorporates the texts, traditions, history, practices and beliefs of the Jewish people. This enriching curriculum is taught within the setting of a liberal, pluralistic Jewish boarding school for grades nine through twelve.

At the American Hebrew Academy , the culture and values of the Jewish people create the living environment for the school community that nurtures and challenges each student to maximize his or her academic, personal and spiritual development. We seek to produce young adults whose strength of character and Jewish identity become lifelong resources for personal growth, commitment to the creative continuity of the Jewish people, and the improvement of the world in which we live, while preparing students for admission to the finest colleges and universities and positions of leadership in the Jewish community.

Philosophy/Belief Statement

We are America 's Only Jewish Pluralistic College Prep Boarding School. We are a community of students, teachers, coaches, administrators, parents, and friends.

Our Jewish backgrounds are varied. Our pioneering spirit connects us all.

We are a Jewish school. What's Jewish? There are as many answers to that question as there are Jews. At the American Hebrew Academy , students from varied backgrounds are discovering what it means to be Jewish. For many, the school is the first place they've been in a setting with other Jewish teenagers. Some are observant; others are just beginning to explore their Jewish identities.

The Academy attracts a diverse international student body from 28 states and 13 countries. We are an international school accepting students from all over the world. We are all Jewish, but we come from many backgrounds across the Jewish spectrum.

Our classes are designed to prepare you for college and to expand one's understanding of their Jewish heritage and religion. Jewish values are a part of all we do and all we learn.

We are a college preparatory school. Modeled after the best boarding schools in the nation, the American Hebrew Academy prepares you for success in college. You'll learn to think analytically and creatively, to write clearly and concisely, and to integrate facts into concepts. Above all, we want you to acquire a passion for learning.

We are a family. Our students know they are linked to a chain of caring teachers, and classmates. Our teachers have studied and taught throughout America and in Israel . Our faculty is more than teachers; they have come to the Academy as human beings always willing and able to help you through a problem, whether it's academic or personal. Learning doesn't begin or end at the classroom.
School History

The American Hebrew Academy was founded in 1996 by Maurice “Chico” Sabbah, z”l, and his wife Zmira who dreamed of developing a first of its kind Jewish community in which Jewish teenagers from around the world and from all Jewish denominations could come together and live in serene environment to enrich their knowledge of Jewish culture, history and religious practice, both traditional and modern while preparing for admissions to college and university and future positions of leadership in the Jewish community.

In 1999 the first foundational steps were taken to bring “ Chico 's dream” closer to reality with the purchase of 100 wooded acres and lake frontage in Greensboro , North Carolina . Chico viewed the land as a perfect setting to create his vision for the Academy's campus in a park like setting. By early spring 1999, following a national architectural competition to design the campus, Frank Lloyd Wright's associate architect, Aaron Green was commissioned to create the master plan for the campus and building designs for every building the Academy would eventually need for the immediate future and for the years to come.

On September 10, 2001 the Academy opened its gates to 77 pioneering (“Chalutzim”) students. During the first year of the Academy's existence, both students and staff endured on-going construction across the campus. Today, the Academy is a thriving international Jewish educational institution whose graduates have all gone to continue their education at some of the finest colleges and universities in the country and around the world.

In 2007 the Academy celebrated its sixth anniversary and today our students and esteemed faculty now enjoy state of the art classrooms, athletic facilities, student housing and advanced technology in a nurturing but rigorous academic environment rich in Jewish culture, tradition and diversity.

JUNIOR TRIMESTER ABROAD

A particularly significant portion of an Academy student's education takes place in Israel . All juniors spend the fall trimester in the interdisciplinary program provided, which immerses students in the historic, geographic, and cultural resources of Israel . In Israel , students continue classroom instruction in core areas, while benefiting from intensive field study and practicing their Hebrew skills with native speakers.

The Academy uses a trimester calendar, with a modified block schedule for some classes (90 minute classes that meet every other day), and single classes (45 minute classes that meet every day)

The esteemed faculty is recruited worldwide with two thirds holding advanced degrees and national certification.
