From ISBD Global: The Official Newsletter of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders, Vol 5, Issue 1, Winter 2004

...Mountain gives a sense of the big picture of human experience within which this condition exists. She then explains the symptoms of depression and mania in a way that relates symptoms to ordinary life experiences. Next, she explains how psychiatric diagnoses are made. This is crucial because the diagnosis of bipolar disorder is not made with a blood test or physical examination. However, for a person to really understand what is wrong with them, they need to understand how the diagnosis is made. With this foundation, Mountain then clearly outlines the treatments. This is also done in a holistic manner offering psychosocial and alternative therapies, where appropriate. Finally, she pays ample attention to support and recovery groups and programs.

I would suggest that Bipolar Disorder: Insights for Recovery should be read by people with bipolar disorder, as well as their loved ones. There are few sources like it that clearly provide the information necessary to cope with this condition while giving a global understanding of the illness in a brief and easy to read format. I would also recommend that health care professionals take a look at it because they might get a surprisingly poignant glimpse into the human condition that is bipolar disorder.
