CROSSBOW This children's book tells the story of Iswa, a Native American boy small for his size but smart and large of heart. Iswa desperately wants to be a successful hunter like his father, and though he tries his best, he lacks the strength to draw the bow taut enough to make a good shot. Iswa's life is further complicated by the bully Matunaaga who takes pleasure in inflicting pain and embarrassment on little Iswa. When Iswa returns home, dejected after another failed hunting trip, his mother urges him to continue practicing, and his father reassures him by saying "You can do whatever you put your mind to...you are smarter than anyone I know." Iswa loves the beautiful lands of his home and is an acute observer of all that happens around him. When Iswa does well in a game and is injured by the jealous Matunaaga, he begins thinking very hard about how to become a better hunter. In the morning he awakes with an idea for a new kind of bow, which he calls a crossbow.
