Exhibits

•  ROAD TO REMBETIKA ( June 30, 2006-January 19, 2007)
This is Rembetika. Greek Blues. Rembetika was the music of the Greek underworld; despised by the middle classes and suppressed by the government and police. Originating in the early 20 th century, Rembetika flourished in ghettos and port cities along the Aegean Coast of Greece and Asia Minor . Discover the colorful history of this unforgettable style of music and learn why it's enjoying a revival. Children will make their own Bouzouki (Greek guitar.)

•  REMEMBERING GENERATIONS: THE GREEK IMMIGRANT'S JOURNEY (permanent exhibit)
This exhibition explores the stages of Greek immigration through works of art, historical artifacts, photographs, and documentary materials. We invite you to explore the paths of the Greek immigrants and their assimilation to all facets of life in the United States . Subjects that will be discussed include culture, customs, and the role of Jane Addams in the Greek community. Experience the journey in our three permanent galleries.

  NOURISHING CULTURES ( February 2, 2007-August 31, 2007)
This exhibit will explore the evolving interaction of food traditions brought from Greece and how new experiences in the U.S. have influenced Greek American cultural identity. (CRAFT FOR CHILDREN: TBA)

•  SELLING AN AMERICAN DREAM: AUSTRALIA 'S GREEK CAFÉ

( September 14, 2007-January 2008)
Explore how Greek cafes in Australia were a "Trojan Horse" for the Americanization of the country's eating and social habits, beginning in the early 20 th century. (CRAFT FOR CHILDREN: TBA)

THE GREEK IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE IN CHICAGO
Learn what it was like for immigrants arriving in America and Ellis Island . The audience will be taken on a historical journey of the immigrant experience, and the beginning of Greektown Chicago. Audience participation is encouraged, and will hear a variety of true stories of immigrants sharing their experiences, challenges, and dreams. Jane Addams and her role in immigrant's lives will also be discussed. This lecture can be followed with a tour of " Remembering Generations : THE GREEK IMMIGRANT'S JOURNEY" (CRAFT FOR CHILDREN: MAKE YOUR OWN PASSPORT)

2) ANCIENT GREEK INFLUENCE
This program explores the influence of the Ancient Greeks on the modern world. Subjects that will be discussed include the Olympics and their evolution into the present, along with politics, philosophy, architecture, and theater. (CRAFT FOR CHILDREN: MAKE YOUR OWN OLIVE CROWN AND PLAY WITH ANCIENT TOYS)

•  THE ERUPTION OF THERA: OPENING THE DOOR TO MYTH
Take a trip back in time to the island of Thera (modern day Santorini), and learn about the culture that gave rise to the Atlantis myth. The audience will get to explore the artwork of the Ancient Minoans and learn about their advanced civilization. Volcanic eruptions will also be discussed, along with their after effects. (CRAFT FOR CHILDREN: MAKE YOUR OWN VOLCANO THAT YOU CAN EXPLODE AT HOME)

•  ALEXANDER THE GREAT AND THE SILK ROAD
In 356 BC, a man was born who would change the world. Proclaimed King at only 20, Alexander was responsible for one of the largest military expansions in history, bridging Asia and Europe forever. Explore his journey as King and follow him through the Silk Road , which enabled diverse cultures to interact, encouraging trade and dialogue between them. Learn about the production of silk and explore the artistic treasures that have survived from his Ancient Empire. Learn about the culture and the man as you journey through the Silk Road . (CRAFT FOR CHILDREN: MAKE YOUR OWN PUZZLE MOSAIC)
