Mission Statement & History

Life Academy of Puget Sound has the goal of equipping Preschool-12th grade students with the educational, social, physical, and life skills required to become successful Christian members of society. We are an affordable home school support program that stresses academic excellence based on Christian values in a nurturing and structured environment.

Through our trained staff and variety of curricula we accommodate each student's learning style and level. Our intent is to produce whole students to serve a fragmented world. Teachers at Life Academy of Puget Sound are not just dispensers of knowledge, but are called upon to model social values such as tolerance, fairness, conflict resolution, and compassion in a way that makes moral character attractive.

Besides our base curricula we offer a wide variety of electives. Students also learn social interaction and important life lessons through field trips, community and volunteer service projects, job apprenticeships, camps, and sports activities.

School History:
We received the records and some of the remaining students from Hope Academy in the Seahurst area of Burien when it closed. We reopened as Life Learning Center in Burien, located at Three Tree Community Church, in 1996 led by Don Wheeler. After a year, Don decided to discontinue the school and sold all the school equipment, supplies, and the school name to a committee consisting of Ali and Steve Turner, Roger and Meg McCammon, and Bob and Margaret Sackett. Ali assumed the duties of administrator while Meg became the principal and assistant administrator. Matt Eldridge and Logan Jennott joined as teachers when the school re-opened that fall. We operated in private homes for two years, after which Ali resigned and Virginia McManus joined us as the administrator.

We moved to Resurrection Life Church in Burien for one year, and finally came to our present home, Bethel Christian Center (BCC), in 1999, as Life Academy of Puget Sound (LAPS). Originally sharing facilities with another home school group and summer camps, we have grown to where we have permanent facilities assigned to our classes year round. Besides facilities dedicated as classrooms for Reading Readiness, ABC's, Elementary, and Junior and Senior High students, we also have the use of an on-campus library; outside play areas; a multi-purpose building used for the hot lunch program and indoor P.E.; the church sanctuary for school chapel and other school wide meetings; and office space.

At BCC we have made a substantial investment in computers and related hardware and software to provide more modern educational aids to our students. Our core curriculum has expanded to include not only the PACE program from ACE but AOP's Lifepac and Switched-on Schoolhouse (computer) programs as well, along with a variety of electives.

Philosophy/Belief Statement

Life Academy of Puget Sound (hereafter abbreviated as LAPS) is committed to providing the best possible Christ-centered, whole student education for K-12 students. We utilize SOT's PACEs, AOP's LIFEPACs, and AOP's Switched on Schoolhouse (SOS) curricula, and are a resource for both full-time and home school students. We believe that teachers can affect children almost as much as their parents, and to that end, we require all of our staff to be born-again believers who have deep commitments to the Lord Jesus and godly character.

Because our student body and staff are from a diverse number of Christian churches and several local school districts, we strive to be tolerant of one another's differences and to promote the following for the students:

1. The understanding of the need for a vibrant personal prayer and devotional life, with opportunity to enhance both through daily prayer and personal fellowship with staff and students.

2. The understanding that a good education is an absolute necessity in order to be used by God in these days, as well as the only way to have one's God-given talents empower one to be marketable in our economy.

3. The understanding that we live in amazing times, with unprecedented opportunities to be “alive to God.” Therefore, parents and students alike will be informed on situations the staff and administration of LAPS feel could further the development of the student. These could include, but are not limited to, mission trips, attending conventions and seminars, fellowshipping with other schools, being involved in various charitable endeavors, and visiting places where church history is in the process of being made. Students will agree to respectfully abide by the decisions of their parents in regard to these activities. Parents will understand they are under no obligation from LAPS to have their children involved in any extra-curricular activities.

4. The opportunity to experience all of the above through the educational ministry of Life Academy of Puget Sound. The administration and staff will commit themselves to providing a Christ-honoring environment that is conducive to academic achievement, with a classroom management plan that is clearly understood by staff, students, and parents, and that is fairly implemented.

5. The importance of obedience to all delegated authority, whether teachers, administrators, parents, the government, or the leadership of your local church.

6. Each student's family's full participation in the local Bible-believing church of their choice. The local church is a powerful force in aiding parents and children to be all they are meant by God to be. Thus, they are partners together with us in teaching our child Christ-like character. Church, home, and school are the three institutions ordained by God to assist your child (and your family) to grow into the full stature of Christ.

7. Physical and moral health involves abstaining from anything harmful to the body and society, such as, but not solely limited to, drugs, tobacco, alcohol, gambling, the occult, violence, and premarital sex. Students are expected to act in a manner that is not offensive to each other and to those who are unbelievers.

8. The expectation that each student honor Christ in all behavior and activities, 24 / 7 / 365 – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
