Morocco is divided into 16 regions. As part of a 1997 decentralization/regionalization law passed by the legislature, 16 new regions were created. These 16 regions are:

Due to the conflict over Western Sahara, the status of both regions of "Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra" and "Oued Ed-Dahab-Lagouira" is disputed.
