Focus: The Paleontological Research Institution's Museum of the Earth features the chronology of the Earth and its life over the last 550 million years, and is a public vehicle and resource to engage visitors of all ages to learn about the natural history of our planets past present and future through the disciplines of paleontology, biology and geology. The Museum allows visitors to experience what life was like in three ancient worlds of New York state: Beneath an Ancient Sea, Where Dinosaurs Walked, and A World Carved by Ice through the use of dynamic permanent and temporary exhibits utilizing PRI's 3 million specimen collection, one of the nations largest and finest fossil collections, as well as a range of special exhibitions of art and other supplemental programming

Major Exhibits:
Right Whale #2030: 44-foot skeleton of near extinct North Atlantic Right Whale, explains her life and tragic death

"Rock of Ages, Sands of Time": Mural by artist Barbara Page. Each tile represents a million years of time, using actual fossil specimens. Explore the relationship between art and science.

"History of PRI"- PRI is the parent organization of the Museum of the Earth, housing a collection of more than 2 million specimens, one of the largest in the U.S. today.

"Geothermal Room" See how the Earth heats and cools the Museum!

-Audio/Visual Theatre presentations - discover the origins of our planet and is life through our state-of-the-art theatres.

- Discovery Labs - Fossil Lab and Dino Lab...come explore at our hands-on learning stations

-Fossil Prep Lab - Witness specimens being prepared for research and exhibition.

    - Evolution exhibit : Explore how life has evolved through time and how we know about this process.

-Mastodon exhibit : The Hyde Park Mastodon is one of the most complete and well-preserved skeletons of these ancient relatives of elephants ever found.

Collection Connections: 75 for the 75th (April 2007 through October 2007) - Come celebrate the 75th Anniversary of PRI with us and view 75 of our amazing specimens.

Dinosaurs in Popular Culture (October 2007 through February 2008) - Check out how dinosaurs have "invaded" our everyday life!

Fishing for Fossils (February 2008 through June 2008) - View fossil fish from Fossil Butte National Monument prepared by our volunteers in our Fossil Prep Lab.

Hatching the Past (June 2008 through September 2008) - Learn about and see fossils of baby dinosaurs before they hatch!

Class Trip Programs and Pricing

Class Trip Programs:
The education department at Museum of the Earth aims to make the history of the Earth and its life accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.  To reach this goal, we offer a wide variety of programs, lectures and field trips to public and private audiences.  Your field trip to Museum of the Earth can be self-guided or include a tour or educational program from our national recognized educators.  We will work with you to schedule and plan your ideal field trip or workshop and answer any of your questions.  Call in the fall to schedule the coming year, spring months fill up very quickly!  Contact our Education Programs Manager at education@museumoftheearth.org or 607-273-6623 ext. 22 to make a reservation for your group of 10 or more.

Class Trip Pricing:
If you choose to have a private tour or education program with us, a discounted admission rate will apply.  Depending upon the size of your group and the age of the youth in your group, a certain number of school group chaparones will be free.

Private Tour: $35 for half hour tour
Education Programs: $70/hour

Ongoing Public Programs:
Public Tours: Public tours of the Museum are offered with your price of admission.  If you would like to bring a group of 10 or more, please make arrangements for a private tour.  Tour times: Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11:30 am, Saturday at 11:00 am.

Natural History at Noon:
Two Saturdays of every month, the Museum invites noted speakers to give a short talk about their areas of expertise. The topics are varied and include lectures ranging from the history of the universe, to fossils found in the rocks of New York State, to the relationships between art and natural history.  These informative lectures are open to everyone and are free with admission to the Museum!

Fossil I.D. Day: Staff paleontologists at Museum of the Earth will help you identify your most puzzling find!  Bring in your mystery rock or fossil on the second Saturday of every month from 10am-12pm.

Dinosaur Tales Reading Time: It's story time for our youngest pre-k explorers at the Museum of the Earth. Keep your little ones entertained with a story and activity to follow.  Every third Thursday of the month at 10:30 am.

Mineral I.D. Day: Have a mineral and not a fossil? No problem.  Long time volunteer Eniko Farkas, a geologist and member of the Cayuga Gem and Mineral Club, helps identify your mystifying minerals.  From 12pm- 1:30pm, every fourth Sunday of the month.
