History:
First organized in 1977 by a group of mothers who were fed up with the unplanned closing of state hospitals and the lack of ANY community support for persons with mental illness. NAMI Minnesota has had many victories in getting decision-makers to create needed community supports and services. The organization strongly advocates for an improved mental health system, offers educational and support opportunities for children and adults with mental illness and their families, and works to end stigma and discrimination.

Mission Statement:
NAMI-MN's mission is to champion justice, dignity, and respect for all people affected by mental illness. Through education, advocacy, and support, we strive to eliminate the pervasive stigma of mental illness, affect positive changes in the mental health system, and increase public and professional understanding of mental illness.
