Focus: The Nevada Northern Railway is an operating historical railroad. It's dirty. It's noisy. It's gritty. It smells of coal smoke, creosote and sweat. Locomotives whistle off, cars clang as they are coupled together, and wheels squeal as the locomotive is turned on the wye. At other times it's eerily quiet, where the only noise is the wind and the hooting of the owl that lives in the coal tower. Walking through the museum you can experience first hand what it took to move a mountain of copper ore. It's the best-preserved standard-gauge short line and complete rail facility left in America. On September 20, 2006, just nine days shy of its centennial, the Nevada Northern Railway Museum was named a National Historic Landmark

Exhibits

Major Exhibits:
Train Excursion service on two routes. The Keystone Route goes through a hundred year old tunnel and towards the open pit mine at Ruth, Nevada. Although the Liberty Pit is not visible from the mine, there is much to see about the mining over the last hundred years. The Adverse Route takes the Hiline toward McGill, Nevada. McGill was the site of the smelter which processed the copper ore from the mine. The Hiline is the old ore route. It has wide sweeping views of Steptoe Valley. Both routes feature narration outline the history of the Railway and surrounding areas. Of particular historical interest is our heritage train, The Steptoe Valley Flyer. This excursion features National Historic Landmarks Engine #40, First Class Coach #5 and Baggage/RPO #20. (RPO means Railroad Post Office.) The Steptoe Valley Flyer is the only excursion we offer that includes both the Keystone and Adverse Routes. Please see our website for dates.
