Mission Statement

The mission of the North Dakota Center for Distance Education (ND CDE) is to provide a delivery system of distance education curricula in a manner consistent with sound educational practices. This mission requires that ND CDE provide personnel, a delivery system, and a curricula responsive to the needs of distance education students.

In this manner, the North Dakota Center for Distance Education will: provide middle and high school supervised distance education curricula free of time and place constraints; provide an alternative educational program of instruction for learners through comprehensive course materials, individualized teacher comments, computer-assisted instruction, and online courses; provide licensed teachers who are professional, ethical, cooperative, and who possess a sense of empathy for students in the distance education course; provide equitable educational opportunities for all students, including the opportunity to earn a high school diploma; provide one-on-one instruction, allowing an individual to work at his or her own pace; and provide new instructional technologies compatible with the distance education course.

School History

The North Dakota Center for Distance Education (ND CDE) was established in 1935 under the name of Supervised Correspondence Department, making North Dakota the first state to provide special appropriations for a high school correspondence program.

Founder and first director, Dr. T.W. Thordarson, envisioned a correspondence high school in which students and adults unable to attend an organized high school would have the opportunity to receive an education, and students who were enrolled in a high school would be given a chance to study courses not offered locally.

Starting with 20 one-semester courses, eight part-time teachers, and three office workers, Dr. Thordarson began a program that we proudly call today the North Dakota Center for Distance Education.

Our course offerings have grown to over 170 print and online courses for grades 6–12. We offer an accredited high school diploma and employ on site a staff of highly qualified and certified teachers, along with administrative and support staff personnel.

ND CDE is proud to help students of all ages achieve their educational goals whether it is to take one course or their entire middle and high school education.

Testimonials

I thought the teachers might really BE distant, but they aren't. Everyone is very helpful and prompt. All of my teachers answer questions if I need help or don't understand something.” –ND CDE Student

It's an awesome way to go to school.” –ND CDE Student

“I love taking Latin through distance education; if you want, you can finish three lessons in one day, and then take a week to become familiar with a new concept. It offers an enormous amount of freedom, and that makes learning easier as well as fun.” –ND CDE Student

Testimonials (Contd.)

“I have been a test supervisor and proctor for ND CDE for over 20 years. I can say that students are prepared for the next level after taking classes from ND CDE. I do recommend them as a top choice for independent study. I currently have a student taking several classes and she is doing well, talks about the feedback, and acts like she is personally acquainted with each of her individual teachers. She refers to them by name when references are made! I have read some of the comments sent back by the instructors, and they appear to be personally interested in the student.” –ND CDE Course Supervisor

“I want to thank you and everyone else at NDCDE for making the graduation a day to remember for my son. He really enjoyed talking to people from around the world. I thank everyone for all their assistance.” –Parent of an ND CDE Graduate

“Thank you so much for all you have done in helping my daughter meet her goals. Since the very beginning . . . the staff and the teachers have been so kind and helpful. We have been very impressed with the courses she has taken. They have been challenging and thorough. The creativity and variety in the lessons has helped make what could have been drudgery into something enjoyable. All of her teachers have responded in a helpful and timely manner.” –Parent of an ND CDE Student
