The Museum's Mission
The Shaker Museum was established as an independent, non-profit, educational institution, its purpose being:
* To preserve and maintain the site of the Shaker Society which once existed at South Union .
* To protect its buildings, its landscape, and its folklife and material culture.
* To use the buildings and grounds to further the interest of the public in historic preservation and Shaker history.
* To sponsor continuing programs of an educational and cultural nature.
Cost: $6.00 for adults; $2.00 for children 6-12; Children 5 and younger - Free
Major Exhibits:
The Shaker community was established in 1807 and closed in 1922. Several of the original buildings have been restored and now house a fine museum of shaker folk-life and material culture. Exhibits in the four-story Centre House, Ministry Shop, Smoke & Milk House and Steam House invite you to view Shaker innovations, furniture, and the history of a unique community. Tour docents explain the history of the Shakers in Kentucky and their relationship to the local economy and the impact of the Civil War. Educational brochures are available to school groups and the tour can be customized to meet specific educational needs.
Class Trip Pricing:
School Group Tour $4.00 per person
Bus drivers and one teacher plus 2 chaperones per class are admitted at no charge. Additional school personnel and parents are to be charged the $4 admittance fee.
Butter Making $0.50 per participant
Candle Dipping $0.50 per participant
Spinning Demonstration $15.00 one-time charge
Weaving Demonstration $15.00 one-time charge
Broom Making $15.00 one-time charge

Shaker Farm Day
October 7, 2006
Step into South Union during the 1870 harvest season. Features twenty living history demonstrations and interactive activities.
Fee: $7 adults, $2 children ages 6-12.
Time: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

A Shaker Breakfast
Saturday, November 4 & 11, 2006
Enjoy a Civil War-era South Union breakfast sered inside the 1869 Shaker Tavern Bed & Breakfast. Features buttermilk biscuits, fried chicken, sweet potatoes, eggs, sausage, peach pie, asparagus, cheese, pickles and much more! Reservations required.
Fee: $20 for museum members; $22 for non-members
Time: Two seatings each Saturday: 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Christmas at Shakertown
Saturday, December 2, 2006 - 9 am - 4 pm
One of Kentucky 's finest antique and craft markets, just in time for the holidays! 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is either a monetary or a canned food donation for local families in need.
Friday night Preview Party - 7 - 9 p.m. : Features a coffee and dessert bar, performances by the South Union Quartet, and, of course, exceptional shopping. Tickets are $10

Programs

Costumed docent gives a guided tour of the museum. For an additional fee, demonstrations in spinning, weaving, and broom making are available. Take home projects include making butter or candles
