School History

In 1885, the Hawaiian Government, hard pressed and concerned over the spread of leprosy in the Kingdom, made a plea to over 50 religious communities in the United States.  The appeal reached Mother Marianne, Superior General for the Franciscan Sisters of Syracuse, New York, who graciously accepted this mission.  This courageous and visionary woman recognized in this call an opportunity for service to the most abandoned of people and an apostolate particularly close to St. Francis himself, namely lepers.  As her work spread throughout the Kingdom of Hawaii , so did the establishment of hospitals and schools.  In 1923, a property in Honolulu was acquired to build a hospital and a novitiate (training center for future sisters).  Then in 1931, eleven acres of land was purchased in Manoa Valley in anticipation of a larger enrollment in the novitiate and the nursing program.  Thus, Saint Francis School was established with the realization of expanding the educational opportunities for young women who wanted a four-year high school diploma.  Today, Saint Francis School is a college-preparatory school that is accredited by the Western Association of Secondary schools and Colleges, the Western Catholic Education Association, and the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools.
