Scoring

Scoring is typically done by machine to avoid individual bias as best as possible. Like several other standardized tests, the raw score does not directly reflect the final score; some questions are considered to be of a higher difficulty level than others and, therefore, carry more scoring weight. Furthermore, the computer uses an algorithm based in part on how many students usually guess the answers to certain higher difficulty questions. If a student correctly answers a large number of low difficulty questions and only a few higher difficulty ones, the machine may void some of the higher level correct answers as guesses.
