Major Exhibits
Horn Island: World of Space and Form, which will feature the works of five different local artists of the past and present: Walter Anderson, Donald Bradburn, Stig Marcussen, Chris Stebly, and Steve White.
The barrier islands are not only long, low islands in the gulf that serve as coastal protection, but they have a life and mythology of their own. Seen through the eyes of artists in the different media of watercolor and of the camera lens, the stark beauty takes on new sight and vision. Color communicates in the textures and vibration of the white paper, and shape and form speak boldly through the blacks and greys of the photograph. Sometimes they have the same dunes and trees as the subject but take on different character. Revisit Horn Island as she was before Katrina on the walls of the Museum. This exhibit will be open until December 30, 2006.
2006/2007 Exhibits
WAMA's upcoming exhibitions for 2007, An Artist's Album of Southern Collections and Louise Lehman: Artist and Collector, both open with a reception at 6 pm on January 25th. An Artist's Album of Southern Collections is composed of some 120 works from over fifteen private collections from as far as Virginia and at least four public collections including the Ogden Museum in New Orleans, the Brooks Museum in Memphis, TN, the Mobile Museum of Art and the collection from the University of Southern Mississippi. "This may be the most unusual show exhibited at WAMA because of its shear size and variety of all "Walter" pieces," said WAMA director, Gayle Petty-Johnson.
This show will include ceramics, watercolors, block prints, oil paintings, and sculpture all by Walter Anderson. Louise Lehman collected was a major collector of Walter Anderson's work. She began collecting in the mid 20th century during frequent trips to the Gulf Coast with her husband.
Her collection was loaned to the Museum in 1991 and was recently acquired as a permanent addition to the Museum's collection. The Lehman collection alone contains some of the hallmark pieces - the Chesty Horse with Flaming Mane and the wooden animals - that were central to the 2003 Centennial exhibition at the Smithsonian in Washington, D. C. Louise Lehman was not only a collector but a talented artist herself. Louise Lehman: Artist and Collector will showcase her talent for the first time on the Gulf Coast. The works for this exhibition have been loaned by her niece, nephew, and several great nieces and nephews. |
Visit to the Walter Anderson Museum of Art (WAMA), opened in 1991 in historic Ocean Springs, MS, is an enchanting and unique experience. WAMA is dedicated to the celebration of the works of Walter Inglis Anderson (1903-1965), American master, whose depictions of the plants, animals, and people of the Gulf Coast have placed him among the forefront of American painters of the Twentieth Century; and to his brothers, Peter Anderson (1901-1984), master potter and founder of Shearwater Pottery; and James McConnell Anderson (1907-1998), noted painter and ceramist.
The watercolors, drawings, oils, block prints, ceramics, and carvings by the three Anderson brothers are all represented in the museum's permanent collection. Diverse changing exhibitions, many featuring the work of other significant artists, occur throughout the year.
The museum's sky lit interior of warm southern yellow pine includes a main galleria and two additional galleries, which echo the natural beauty and simplicity of its setting. Adjacent to the museum is the Ocean Springs Community Center, home of Walter Anderson's largest mural.
