Certified teachers of the visually impaired (TVIs) have long been frustrated about the high TVI vacancy rate throughout the nation; by their heavy caseloads, and the inability to find time to adequately train local school personnel. We can't be with our students all day long and we depend heavily on the school personnel to follow through on our recommendations. Sometimes it work, sometimes I doesn't. The more time we spend training school staff about the unique aspects of visual impairment and the fine line between hovering and helping, the more likely the school staff will be able to follow through on our recommendations when we are not there
Welcoming Students with Visual Impairment to Your School provides TVIs and certified orientation and mobility specialists ( COMS ) with the resource tool to train others about the unique aspects of students with visual impairments. We can use parts or all of this tool as needed and even expand on sections as needed. As stated in the manual, this resource is not meant to replace direct work or consultation with a certified teacher of the visually impaired or certified orientation and mobility specialist.
Thanks to the Gibney Family foundation, the Perkins School for the Blind and the authors of Welcoming Students with Visual Impairment to Your School for creating this tool for all TVS and COMS who depend on school staff to work with our students when we are not there. I am thrilled to have this training resource at my fingertips. I look forward to creating an annual workshop for Vermont schools that have students with visual impairments. -Stephanie Bissonette, Supervisor Vermont Association for the Blind |
