Our Jesuit Identity
We are the parish school for St. Thomas More Catholic Church which is sponsored by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). We share the society’s mission to spread God’s love with others. As a school, we are committed to the Jesuit traditions of academic excellence, the service of faith, and the promotion of justice.

Saint Thomas More School is an important ministry of St. Thomas More parish, focused on educating students within the tenets of Jesuit traditions and Ignatian spirituality. These traditions include academic excellence, critical thinking, social action, the development of moral character and the presupposition of goodness in others. The hallmark of Jesuit education is its focus on educating the whole child: mind, body and spirit.

School History:

For seven decades, Saint Thomas More Catholic School has provided an education combining academic excellence and Gospel values to children in Decatur, Georgia and the surrounding communities. Over the years, our highly-qualified teachers and staff, parents, and students have formed a tightly-knit community we call our STM family.
In 1948, the Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta purchased land for the eight-year-old parish on West Ponce de Leon Avenue in Decatur. A convent, school, church, and rectory were constructed. St. Thomas More Catholic School opened on September 1, 1950, with approximately 140 children in grades 1-5. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur staffed the school. Grades 6, 7, and 8 were added in successive years.
In 1955, the lower school building was constructed. This facility relieved some overcrowding and provided space for a kindergarten. By the end of the 1980’s, the number of students again created a need for expanded facilities. In June 2000, the last of the teaching sisters of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur retired. The convent building was renovated to house parish offices, meeting spaces, and additional classrooms.
In 2002, St. Thomas More constructed the Notre Dame de Namur Center, a multipurpose building with a full-sized gymnasium, stage, and music and band rooms.
In early 2016, Archbishop Wilton Gregory invited priests of the Society of Jesus to staff Saint Thomas More parish. With their arrival, the parish school took on the characteristics of a school in the tradition of the Jesuits, although still governed by the policies set by the Archdiocese of Atlanta.
