IB Authorization: 11/21/2016
Founded: 1994
Organization Affiliation: Father Sillers referred to St. Mary’s (his fourth school, opened in 1994 with only four classroom trailers) as the Jewel in the Crown for good reason; it was the first of his schools to be non-church affiliated and, in his words, “most in line with the world.” Including all faiths in a school that defines itself within the trinity of integrity, academics, and spirituality, he believed, is the best way to prepare youths for the inevitability of a more globally-connected world… one that is intellectually diverse, interconnected by technology, and perennially in flux. His dream was to turn students into world citizens who, when tested, would find strength from their St. Mary’s foundation.

Mission Statement:

World-sized hearts. World-class minds.

Philosophy/Belief Statement:

Preparing and inspiring children of today to become courageous, caring, global citizens and enlightened leaders of tomorrow.

Programs and Services:

Understanding who you are and having the self-confidence to adhere to those decisions isn’t something we take for granted at St. Mary’s School. We guide each student to develop their personal belief system and to be comfortable expressing their opinions. It’s all part of understanding that we’re an essential part of how the world improves. Here, students make practical, thoughtful connections between their studies and the world. These lessons are interwoven into the curriculum from an early age. Our Student Life Enrichment teaches collaboration, conflict resolution and confidence. Counselor-led mindfulness instruction leads Lower School classes towards emotional literacy and empathy.

The parents, students and teachers will share in the responsibility to learn and practice the IB Attitudes and Learner Profile to develop positive character. Students are provided with the knowledge, skills and tools needed to be successful with the use of the Responsive Classroom’s approach to building a positive community through the following learning opportunities:
-collaborate with others, build new relationships and strengthen existing relationships
-develop authentic self-worth and confidence, understanding how they individually contribute to their surrounding environment
-successfully address conflicts, understand the consequences of their choices and create positive solutions
-appreciate others’ ideas, feelings and convictions while recognizing different opinions and perspectives
-identify and acknowledge their own emotions, thoughts and actions

The social, emotional and spiritual development of our students occurs in daily classroom instruction, throughout K-5 Chapel, Community and social skills instruction. In these formats, students will experience learning from individual opportunities to school-wide venues.

The World is Your Classroom:
A student can read about the American Revolution or watch a video about the ocean, but it does not have the same impact as seeing Colonial Williamsburg or enjoying the marvels snorkeling in Catalina. Our unique Field Studies program integrates academic content areas into a realistic approach to learning beyond the classroom environment. Through one-day field trips or weeklong field studies, students experience learning among a natural setting, reinforcing the concepts taught in the classroom. This program offers distinctive opportunities for observation, research and interaction all within native settings. Field studies build responsible and cooperative learning that occurs in real-world situations to provide academic enhancement while creating cultural awareness amidst historic and educational settings.

Notes/School Information:

Our time to make an impact on the world is right now.

"I CAN" At St. Mary's School, we teach students to ask "what" and "why" not only because they're intellectually curious and caring, but also so that they can understand that they're an essential piece of the answer to "how."

"I AM" The whole world is at our fingertips. That makes influencing what the wide world will become both our pleasure and our responsibility. It's up to us.

At St. Mary's School, we look deeply and decide for ourselves. We devote our world-sized hearts and world-class minds to creating something new-something unique and better-for ourselves, for our community and for the planet.

We're doing it right now. Won't you?
