Additional Information

Ages: We´ve had students from 5-85 years old.

We are located in the heart of the city of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, in the historic district, in a beautiful building constructed at the end of the 19th Century.

Quetzaltenango is a city known as a student destination. As such, we have seven universities, a variety of internet cafes, restaurants, theaters, banks and travel agencies. We also have an endless number of possible activities which will make your stay in this city fantastic!

Quetzaltenango is a city alive with traditional celebrations, such as the Celebration of Señor de Esuipulas, a Catholic festival honoring a classic Central American religious icon. We also have the Central American Indepence Fair located in our beautiful city, famous for the myriad of foods, flavors, colors and traditions. Other celebrations include The Fairs of local communities such as Almolonga, San Juan and San Antonio and the great celebration to the Virgin of the Rosary.

Quetzaltenango´s location is privileged: It is an hour from the Pacific Coast, an hour from Lake Atitlan, and an hour from the Archaelogical Site Tak´alik Abáj. The city is surrounded by mountains and volcanoes, including Santa Maria, Candelaria, and is just a few hours from the Tallest Volcano in Central America- Tajulmulco. Because of the volcanic activity around the city, some of our most famous and most enjoyed attractions are Natural Hot Springs and Natural Steam Baths.

In summary, being in Quetzaltenango brings with it the risk of falling in love with the city, the culture, the language and more, and to stay much longer than one intends. We at the school are here to provide whatever information you may desire: Spanish classes - online or here at the school, volunteering and tips for travels and your stay in Guatemala.

Celas Maya was founded in 1999 with the purpose of teaching Spanish to foreign students, in the form of one to one. Celas Maya has always stood for leadership in: methodological and didactic innovation and the high quality of teaching. The quality has been achieved through a program of training courses and training, based on research of the Spanish language and K’iche. Celas Maya has served several universities in the United States and Europe with Spanish courses for groups of students who come to study the Spanish language as part of their studies in anthropology, research, human rights, Latin American studies, and other disciplines. The experience with these groups has been very successful because living in Guatemala, feeling like part of a local family, participating in a varied program of activities, as well as being immersed in volunteer work programs all offer the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of Guatemalan culture.
