Service Description: Information, Referral and Advocacy for parents of children with developmental disabilities.
Mission Statement:

The FSPDD program is an information, referral and advocacy service. Parent advocates who had children with developmental disabilities started FSPDD in the 1990’s. These advocates wanted to help others access community based services and to heighten awareness of the developmentally disabled.

Information, referral and advocacy, parenting skills classes and parent support group and legal guardianship

Monthly sensory friendly movie showings at Bay Plaza movie theatre for children with special needs.
Monthly parent support group

Support Groups: FSPDD meets the last Friday of the month at North Central Bronx Hospital, from 10:00 AM-12:00Noon, Rm. 15A25 Parents of Angels/Bx. ASA parents of children with autism meet the third Thursday of the month at 1968 Eastchester Road, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, child care is provided.

Cognitive Disorder (Mental retardation) is a generalized disorder, characterized by sub average cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors with onset before the age of 18. Once focused almost entirely on cognition, the definition now includes both a component relating to mental functioning and one relating to the individual's functional skills in their environment. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that now affects 1 in every 150 children in the United States. Autism is commonly diagnosed between the ages of one to three years. Characterized by varying degrees of impairment in communication skills, social interactions, and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, children with autism can exhibit symptoms that run mild to severe with widely differing symptom profiles

The FSPDD/Bx. ASA program is an information, referral and advocacy service. Parent advocates who had children with developmental disabilities started FSPDD n the 1990’s. These advocates wanted to help others access community based services and to heighten awareness of the developmentally disabled. The Bx. Chapter Autism Society of America collaborated with FSPDD due to the increase of children with autism.  These programs are part of the Social Work Department of North Central Bronx Hospital. We are funded through the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities-New York State. Our program assists parents and caretakers in coordinating and providing services for individuals with disabilities. We provide services in English and Spanish.     
 
Services Provided by FSPDD /Bx. ASA
1.      Information, referral and advocacy through community based services (i.e. entitlement benefit assistance, academic program advocacy, vocational advocacy, etc.)
2.      Crisis Intervention
3.       Parent Support Group/Peer Support/Peer Counseling (Family/Parent/Caregiver Training)- Support Group meets the last Friday of the month at North Central Bronx Hospital-17th Floor from 6:30pm-8:30pm.

5.      Systems Advocacy/Legislative Advocacy
6.      Parenting Skills Class through Young Adults Institute Project Grow
