Academic Programs: Twain Preschool focuses on preparing children to be successful in kindergarten and beyond by using research based instructional strategies in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. The district’s preschool program is aligned with the Preschool Learning Foundations and Curriculum Framework developed by the California Department of Education which identifies the knowledge, skills and competencies that children typically attain as they complete their first and second year of preschool. Program components address social-emotional, physical, and cognitive development in key areas that are necessary for kindergarten readiness. In addition, the preschool program provides appropriate services to support the needs of English Language Learners. Pinnacle® School Age Curriculum is a research-based early childhood curriculum. Based on the works of Piaget, Gardner, and Erikson, Pinnacle® provides early childhood educators with lessons that engage children in developmentally appropriate activities. • Developmentally appropriate activities that adhere to early childhood education industry standards • Clearly stated learning objectives to help facilitate learning in all domains • Flexible programming to accommodate varied learning styles • Carefully selected themes that capture children’s interest • Long-range goals linked to Key Standards • Provides suggestions to enrich childhood developmental milestones based on research • Interactive activities that help children develop a love for learning while they are growing, playing, and having fun • Suggested book lists related to theme Time is allocated to support homework and classroom requirements. Our goal is to provide a balanced, engaging program for our children.

School History:

The LBUSD Child Development Centers opened their first preschool in 1941, to support the widows who were living in the Navy housing project. In 1943 the project was extended to include school age care services, and the program grew to 21 preschool and school age care centers across Long Beach, Signal Hill and Lakewood. Today the program has continued to grow to 28 centers serving subsidized and fee based families in our part day and full day preschool programs as well as our TK-5th grade fee based and subsidized school age care programs.
