Philosophy/Belief Statement:

We cherish the Earth and care about the future of its life-giving freshwater. We seek to instill this sense of stewardship by experiencing nature first-hand. Because people learn best by doing, all of the programs offered by ISEA are experience-based.

Our approach is inquiry based, which means the participant is challenged to ask questions and then seek answers. Since everything is related and interconnected, ISEA provides experiences that show the connections among academic disciplines, as well as connections between what is learned and how it can be applied in everyday life.

Testimonials: Teacher Quotes:

"Each station involved students in a hands-on method. That was the best part!"

"I appreciate the knowledge and enthusiasm of your crew and instructors. I honestly wouldn't change a thing!"

"They really enjoyed the microscope video. This program is an excellent complement to the TCAPS curriculum."

"In general, this was a very positive experience. Students feel connected to the bay…most had never been on the bay before this trip. Incredible volunteers! They were great!"

"The Inland Seas trip is the most educational field trip we have ever been on. The students enjoy this trip more than any other trip. We can't thank you enough!"

"One boy asked me if he could go again--he does nothing in school, you totally motivated him."

"It was wonderful. The volunteers were well trained, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. Our students learned a great deal from this experience."

"Stations are very well-organized and the instructors are knowledgeable. They do a good job at keeping the kids attention."

"My easily distracted students were highly focused and engaged! Hands-on learning is always the best!"

"One student explained that he would like to learn more about sailing in general. He brought up the Navy! This from a child who is not very motivated to learn traditionally. Thanks!"

"The Schoolship program is just a wonderful experience for my students. Many of them would NEVER have an experience like this in their life!"

"I think the experience definitely fosters a sense of stewardship and provides students with a chance to apply what they've learned in class."

"Students who have low self esteem, who rarely speak, walk from class to class with their heads down, came alive on the ship…they answered questions and talk about the experience still today…"

"From the moment we stepped on the deck until we returned to the dock four hours later, we experienced the true meaning of authentic learning."

Student Quotes:

"I had a lot of fun classifying fish and plankton. You really know how to make learning fun."

"Missing school was the least of my worries. We learned so much that it was like school, but much more fun."

"There are many little clever gadgets to take samples with. If I had to take a sample I would have never thought of any of these gadgets. I got to turn the whole schooner around. The captain was very nice. He is very lucky to have such a good crew and ship."

"I really liked when we identified the animals that found in the muck and plants Even though it was pouring. I had a great time. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to learn something new."

"Thank you for teaching me stuff I will remember for life"

"You all made lots of things fun and I liked it how you gave everyone a chance to be involved with the work that needed to be done on the boat."

"The cold and the wet didn't dampen our spirits in the slightest…we were having a blast! I have a ton of great memories."

"Looking at the plankton in the microscope and seeing the samples on the screen was awesome. We found a dead dragonfly."

"I loved identifying the plants and other organisms! I got them all right!"

"I loved learning to steer the boat!"

"I feel so accomplished. My mom will be really proud of me for steering the ship."
