Charles Umlauf was an art educator at the University of Texas for forty years. In 1985, he and his wife, Angeline, gave their home, studio, and 168 pieces of Umlauf sculpture to the City of Austin. Today, the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum represents a unique partnership between the City of Austin, owner of the property and artwork, and the Friends of the Umlauf Sculpture Garden, the non-profit that is responsible for funding, managing, and maintaining the museum and its programs.

The mission of the Umlauf is to provide educational programs and experiences that encourage the understanding and appreciation of sculpture. Educational opportunities are available for all ages and allow patrons to see art, to talk about art, to touch art, and to make art.
