We strive to provide a tutoring service and conducive learning environment which will help adults improve their reading, speaking, listening, writing, mathematics, and basic computer skills. We enable learners to transform their lives by acquiring skills to become successful parents, productive workers, and responsible citizens.

Philosophy/Belief Statement:

We believe in respecting the dignity of every person and in the value of educational opportunities in preparing our learners to live out their roles as a parent, worker, and citizen.

Program History:

The program began in August 1989 with three staff members and five tutors. By September the increase in student requests was so great that additional tutors and volunteers were quickly sought from the community. Since then, the Dominican Literacy Center has grown and has helped over 4,500 students in its twenty years in the Detroit area.

Events:

The Dominican Literacy Center offers a tutor training workshop three times throughout the year. At these workshops tutors receive proliteracy certifications and extensive information about tutoring an adult learner. The center also has various student study workshops and tutor tune ups through the year, as well as monthly orientations for both the students and tutors.

Additional Information:

The Dominican Literacy Center is constantly looking for new, enthusiastic volunteers to help meet the needs of our students.  Tutors meet with one student, weekly, for just two hours and work on basic reading and writing, English, or math.  The center provides training and all the materials necessary for tutors, including a computer lab.  No prior teaching or tutoring experience is necessary, if you can read, you can tutor!
