InnerSpark is a rigorous training program for talented artists of high school age. It was created by the California Legislature, and held its first session in 1987. Its purpose is to provide a training ground for future artists who wish to pursue careers in the arts and entertainment industries in California . Students enrolled in grades 9 through 12 may attend InnerSpark. Participants are selected in the Spring on the basis of their talent and creativity as demonstrated through assignments and teacher recommendations. The admissions process is highly competitive; approximately 1 in 3 applicants are accepted in each department.
