Susan Orloff, OTR/L is the author of the book, "Learning Re-enabled : a guide for parents, teachers and therapists". It was reviewed and endorsed by the National Education Association, and was a featured book of the month in NEA Today Magazine . She is the owner of Children's Special Services, LLC a provider of comprehensive therapy services for children aged 3-15. She writes the "Ask the Therapist" column for Exceptional Parent Magazine , and the "Sensory Scene" for Advance for Occupational Therapists , and has been a contributor to Instructor Magazine . She was recently awarded "Georgia Woman of Distinction" by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation; Georgia and Tennessee Chapters, for her outstanding contributions to the lives of handicapped and learning disabled children in Georgia . She also serves on the GA Governor's council for Developmental Disabilities, and volunteers on the GA Advocacy Council to help parents obtain access for services and information that they might otherwise be unaware of, or not know how to access. In addition she is a Board Member of the Georgia Occupational Therapy Association. Her major goal is to help all children find themselves "amazing" and that their total being is both valuable and precious. Her second book is the "Handwriting on the Wall © " which includes her US Trademarked "Write Incredibly Now tm" W.I.N.tm Program. She is in the process of writing a third book, "The Light at the End of the Tunnel"; a guide for parents and children in navigating the frustrating and confusing route to resolving learning differences. It is the goal of this book to help both parents and children alleviate confusion and anxiety as they navigate the learning disability path from suspicion to confirmation to action. The preface to her new book is the essence of her mission: "If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so we weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place." ~Margaret Mead ~ Graduated from the University of Maryland with a concentration in special education, with continued graduate studies in occupational therapy at the University of Pennsylvania , she has been an occupational therapist for over 34 years. During that time she has helped develop many programs for children who learn differently. She is a Board Member of the Georgia Occupational Therapy Association. She lectures pro-bono to schools and community groups, to help parents and teachers understand the issues facing children with learning disabilities. She has presented regularly at the International Learning Disability Conference for the past four years. She has also presented at an annual conference of The American Occupational Therapy Association. She has lectured at Emory University, The Medical College of Georgia, Medical University of South Carolina, Azusa Pacific University in Azusa California, and other schools and universities throughout the USA. She also trains masters and doctoral students pursuing degrees in occupational therapy for 8 different universities throughout the United States. She is the leading expert and seminar provider on pediatrics based therapies for Advanced Rehabilitation Services, Inc. an international seminar provider based in Marietta, GA. She participated in the early standardization of Ayres Southern California Sensory Integration Tests, a nationally used test for discerning sensory issues with children; and was awarded the "Outstanding Educator Award" from the South Carolina Occupational Therapy Association in 1981, was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the South Carolina Occupational therapy Association of educational services in 2004 and "Therapist of the Year" from Advanced Rehabilitation Services, Inc. in 1994; and is the only occupational therapist in the state of Georgia to be accepted into the American Association of Educational Therapists. |
