Emphasizing experiential therapy, Discovery Ranch uses a variety of approaches to reach and help students. One approach is using Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or DBT. Our students typically struggle with conditions such as ADHD, mood disorders, depression, adoption, anxiety, substance abuse, and similar conditions. We teach students how to use mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance to cope with daily living stresses and make positive lifestyle choices. The experiential components give ample opportunities for students to try out their new skills. |
At Discovery Ranch, experiential therapy is at the heart of our therapeutic approach. We believe for therapy to be most effective it should occur in a variety of formats, many of which students are unaware of. Effective therapy involves not only the cognitive exchange of internal processing, but a sensory rich and emotionally laden environment that supports change 24/7. Experiential therapeutic activities which involve sights, sounds, smells, and touch work in partnership with intensive clinical sessions to provide an unparalleled therapeutic experience. |

Discovery Ranch offers clinically intensive care with a foundation in experiential therapy. Students reside in two homes located on twenty acres on a spectacular ranch. Every aspect of their daily living routine is the basis for therapeutic learning. Their activities include equine, ropes courses, raising calves, residential life skills, and academics. Students and therapists process learning from each of these activities during and after the event. In addition, each week students participate in individual, group and family therapy sessions. |
Discovery Ranch is proud to offer one of the most comprehensive experiential programs in the industry. Discovery students participate in the following hands-on programs to augment their therapy sessions: Caring for newborn calves, equine therapy, ropes courses, quilt tying, “Forget About Me” projects, buddy sports leagues with mentally challenged children, Make a Difference Day of community service, life skills/goal setting, campus flower beds and garden, academic field trips, hiking, biking, fun runs, and camping. |
