Final Frontiers is a physics competition held every November in Montgomery County, Maryland at Thomas Sprigg Wootton High School and in Prince George's County, Maryland at Eleanor Roosevelt High School.

Rules

Every year there are five main events plus a mystery event. For the five main events, each school can send one team (in Montgomery County) or two teams (in Prince George's County) per event per division. The preparation for and building of, if applicable, these events must be completed before the competition date. The mystery event is not revealed until the competition begins, at which time each school will have a limited amount of time to complete that event. The mystery event is the only event for which all building occurs on-site.

Divisions

The divisions are as follows:

Grade 5

Grades 6-7

Grades 8-9

Grades 10-12

2005 Competition

The 2005 competition was held on November 12, 2005 in Montgomery County and on November 19, 2005 in Prince George's County.

The events in 2005 were:
Slow Roller
Micro Mass Tower
Lunar Bridge
Newton's Nightmare
Mass Driver
Mystery Event

For Slow Roller, students had to construct an object that would roll down a meter stick the most slowly. For Micro Mass Tower, students had to construct a tower out of paper and masking tape that could hold a stack of coins. For Lunar Bridge, students had to create a bridge out of balsa wood that could hold a brick. For Newton's Nightmare, students had to take a timed physics exam on-site. For Mass Driver, students had to build a catapult that could propel a piece of clay at a target. The Mystery Event is not allowed to be publicly announced until both competitions have been held; it will be posted here soon.
