I wonder at times how my Aspergers Syndrome affects me, it is difficult to have anything to compare it to as I was born this way. Not being able to understand other people's thoughts, motives and behaviours is at times frustrating. I can similarly get impatient easily at the way they are unpredictable. Teamwork is not my strongpoint.

I think (although I cannot prove) what caused my autism spectrum disorder. Genetics are a factor, but during the first few weeks of the pregnancy my mother was taking medication. Certain medications have been linked to an increased risk of autism that have a similar effect to the one she was taking. Unfortunately the diagnosis was wrong, and therefore the drug she was taking was unecessary.

In such a situation some foetuses have been aborted so I suppose I should count myself lucky.

I tried studying the effects this had on people and animals when I went to university. Unfortunately there is very little data on it. It took me years to self educate myself in enough fields merely to understand the pharmacology, veterinary medicine and other fields I needed to to not only understand why but how. Studies were only done following people to the age of 8, which makes me wonder what the effects after eight are (I am 28). Who knows?

I am who I am and the Aspergers Syndrome gives me advantages others don't have - I can see the patterns in things. Yes I still jump to conclusions like everyone else does, but I try to learn and progress.

I still have a childlike curiousity of the world which in some ways insulates me from it. I live on my own. I have my job, my studies, hobbies and life. Yes people are missing from it somewhat, but I prefer it that way.
