The Museum of Ceramics highlights East Liverpool's proud past as the Pottery Capital of the Nation, focusing on ware made in hundreds of local potteries. The museum is in a lovely Beaux Arts building on the National Register for Historic Places; the building is the old 1909 post office.
The 35 minute multimedia show introduces visitors to the background history of the area beginning with the 1840's before they begin their tour of the museum. With over 4,000 objects displayed over two floors, the museum has been described as a 'gem' by one popular tourism guide. There is a 1930's era Works Progress Administration mural on display, and dozens of paintings.
A History Mystery Scavenger Hunt tailored to three age ranges introduces students and their accompanying adults to specific interesting and historic items. A salesman's showroom is recreated, as are three different dioramas with life- size mannequins engaged in some of the traditional tasks of the potteries.
Most visitors spend about 90 minutes in the museum. The museum displays a huge ceramic trophy celebrating a carrier pigeon's flight, 48 Victorian shaving mugs, a large ceramic business card, a ceramic butter churn, and an enormous teapot. In recent years people have visited from more than 40 states, as well as 35 countries. |
This museum offers visitors a microcosm of 19th century life, and has something for practically everyone. We are currently only partially accessible. See our website for details. We eagerly await your call or visit! Information correct as of September 2008.
On May 31, 2008, the Museum of Ceramics lost 93% of funding from the Ohio Historical Society (OHS). After 28 years as a fully-funded site of the OHS, it is now managed by the Museum of Ceramics Foundation. Efforts to find new alternative sources of support are ongoing. Every donation is greatly appreciated!
