History:

YMCAs have been offering child care programs since the 1970's. Collectively, they make up the largest provider of school-age care in the nation

Program Highlights:

The YMCA School-Age Care Curriculum Framework is designed around eight core curriculum areas; Arts and humanities, Character development, Health, wellness, and fitness, Homework support, Literacy, Science and technology, Service learning, and Social competence and conflict resolution.

We're open when school is closed! When schools are closed; planned or weather-related, the YMCA offers a fun-filled day program which includes arts & crafts and physical and social recreation, as well as swimming when at the YMCA. This days are called S.O.Y.I.; School's Out, Y's In.

Activities:

Snack -A light snack is offered in the afternoon

Homework Support - The B.A.S.E. Program is a recreation-based program; it is not an extension of the school day. But the YMCA recognizes the need to support parents and their desire for children to have time to work on their homework. An educational alternative will be offered for children who do not want or need to work on their homework.

Group Activities - Children in B.A.S.E. are given the opportunity to participate in a group activity each day. We provide both small and large group activities.

Child Choice - School-age children must be given the opportunity to choose or be a part of the planning of the daily program activities. Staff will work with the children to plan several meaningful activities that the children can choose to participate in. Children always have the right to pass. (Everyday)

Free Choice- School-age children need an opportunity to "hang-out." This can be accomplished during outside time and through interest centers.

Mission of the Michiana Family YMCA: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
