Library History:
The Cherry Hill Public Library (CHPL) was established in 1960. For six years it operated from a single store front in a small shopping center serving a population of 31,500 residents. The Library moved to its first permanent location at 1100 Kings Highway North in 1967 where it flourished for nearly 40 years, serving a growing population. By the late 1990s, Cherry Hill (a 24 square-mile municipality minutes from Philadelphia) had grown to nearly 70,000 residents. With just 24 computers, 60 parking spots and limited space for materials and events, Cherry Hill's library facility was outdated, overcrowded and struggling to meet the needs of a younger, more technologically advanced population.
In 2000, a library planner recommended a new state-of-the-art library facility for Cherry Hill. After almost two years of research, which included focus panels, community forums, phone and intercept surveys, a strategic plan was developed which led to architectural plans. In November 2003, ground was broken for a new 72,000 square foot facility that would truly become the "Heart of Town."
The new Cherry Hill Public Library opened its doors on Dec. 21, 2004 making 2005 a monumental year for library services in Cherry Hill Township.
