Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy

The school is located in central Saginaw on the west riverfront, conveniently located just off I-675 for the many families traveling from other counties and districts to attend. The school's campus is undergoing extensive ($7M) additions and renovations in 2010.

Concentrations (Career Pathways) focus: Language Arts, Global Studies, Math/Science, Dance, Theatre, Voice-Keyboard, Visual Arts 2D and 3D. World Languages and Band as elective departments.

Exceeds MI Merit Curriculum requirements in all content areas. Full and half-day enrollment supported. 24 credits required for graduation, most students eligible for dual enrollment in Senior year. Wide range of Advanced Placement (AP) courses available in high school, middle school as determined by placement test. Emphasis on the arts for all students as appreciation audience, if not participatory.

SASA's first graduating class was in 2002 after 1998 change to offer a full day program, grades 6-12. We have had several National Merit Scholars, multiple AP Scholars and two recent Presidential Scholar Candidates.

Over the years, students have won countless awards and earned many prestigious scholarships. Our graduates have annually earned over 1.5 million in scholarships (while as of 2010, our graduating class size was still under 50 students.) Annually, students have performed in an exemplary manner on Advanced Placement Examinations. The school has produced two Presidential Scholars, three Congressional pages, many State and International Science and Engineering Fair Award winners, top award winners in the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition, Blue Lake and Interlochen scholarship recipients, top national student poets, Scholastic Writing and Art Award winners, and Governor's Traveling Art Award exhibitors, to name just a few. ICONs, our art and literary magazine, has earned several Gold Crowns and annual national awards for excellence from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

Application, written on-site test in verbal and mathematical reasoning and writing skills; 2 exemplary  teacher recommendations, recent transcript or report card showing performance level at A's and B's, national test scores in 80th percentile or higher; auditions for visual and performing arts areas, good attendance and disciplinary records. Applications taken beginning in February of each year for the following fall.  Limited openings n some concentrations, most existing at grade 6 entry level. Mid-year admissions from G/T programs in other areas.

The Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy exists to expand and enhance the learning opportunities and accomplishments of the gifted/talented student. By providing a unique learning environment with a differentiated instructional design and expectations, SASA challenges the superior potential of students in the areas of general intellectual ability, creative and productive thinking, visual and performing arts, specific academic aptitude, leadership and community service.

Furthermore, the Academy is committed to encouraging the fullest emotional and mental development of SASA learners by recognizing the students’ unique developmental needs, cognitive abilities and learning styles. Working collaboratively, the staff provides diverse opportunities for the fulfillment of the learner’s strengths, talents and interests, believing that each student has the potential to become an independent, creatively productive contributor to society.

The Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy (SASA) has been expanding and enhancing learning opportunities for gifted/talented students in the Tri-County area since 1981. During its history, initially as the Center for the Arts and Sciences (C.A.S.) and since 1999 as the Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy, it has earned a national reputation for excellence. The school is operated by the School District of the City of Saginaw as a magnet application-based school for 5 neighboring counties and for Saginaw County.
