History:

Bipolar disorder is a severe and debilitating mental illness, which has only recently started to receive the necessary attention from society, researchers, practitioners, government, and private funding agencies. In response to the need for further awareness, education, and research on this severe mental illness, the International Society for Bipolar Disorders was created. The Society has as its missions the promotion of awareness of this condition in society at large, promotion of awareness and education about this condition among mental health professionals, fostering research on all aspects of bipolar disorder, and promotion of international collaboration in this area.

The International Society for Bipolar Disorders was launched at the III International Conference on Bipolar Disorder, in Pittsburgh , PA , June 17, 1999 by David J. Kupfer, M.D., President. Material distributed to all of the delegates at the conference contained an invitation letter and an enrollment form.

The first issue (September, 1999) of Bipolar Disorders - An International Journal of Psychiatry and Neurosciences, which is the official journal of the Society, contained a similar enrollment form. The journal was accepted into the Institute for Scientific Indexing in 2000 and into Medline and Index Medicus in 2001 and received its fourth impact factor of 4.812 in 2006, ranking it 11th out of 94 rated psychiatric journals. The Society is growing in membership with an elected board representing 10 countries. The ISBD is a major source for emerging research and clinical data on bipolar disorders and is the only bipolar focused, research-oriented Society working to bring this data to patients, families and other mental health professionals working on the front lines of bipolar care.

Detailed Organization Information:

Psychiatric Trainee Support Program

The International Society for Bipolar Disorder (ISBD) is committed to promoting awareness and education on bipolar disorders among mental health professionals worldwide. As a step toward meeting this goal in the global community, the ISBD has offered psychiatric trainees complimentary memberships in the Society since this program was launched in 2001.  A review of the Program History shows the Society's commitment to this effort and this year we have made significant improvements to the program based on feedback we have received from the participants themselves.

In addition to offering more opportunties for trainees to become meaningfuly involved in the Society, we have extended the term to of sponsorship to two-years, opened it to  junior faculty up to the Assistant Professor or equivalent level, and recruited 70% of trainees from countries outside the Canda, the US and Western Europe.

ISBD Fellowship Award

The International Society for Bipolar Disorder (ISBD) recognizes the vital role of developing the next generation of leaders in the field of bipolar disorder and will offer one $20,000 fellowship award to support research in the field of bipolar disorders. The main purpose of this award is to provide an opportunity for a trainee to get training in research methodology that he/she may not have access to otherwise.  Thus, the intent of this award is to provide an opportunity for the recipient to travel to another facility to get training in a particular type of research methodology (i.e. brain imaging, genetics, clinical trials, etc.). The fellowship award is intended to cover the salary and travel costs for the trainee, while the research related costs would be covered by the mentor.
