Educational Excellence
The goal of Jean Massieu Academy is to promote educational excellence for children from early childhood through Grade 12 using innovative teaching models. The academy was originally founded to serve deaf students throughout the Dallas / Fort Worth metroplex. As an open-enrollment charter school, JMA now serves over 120 students, approximately 10% of which are deaf or hard of hearing. English is the primary language of instruction with American Sign Language provided for the deaf population and as second language acquisition for hearing students. JMA is proud to provide small class sizes, highly qualified teachers, and individualized education through bilingual / bicultural communication.

Philosophy/Belief Statement:

All students benefit from the highly qualified staff, small class sizes, and caring atmosphere at the Academy. This is clearly evidenced by students "can-do" attitude, pride in achievements, and academic success.

Enrollment Characteristics: Approximately 50% of student population are African-American, 48% are Hispanic, and 2% are other. Ten percent of the student population are deaf or hard of hearing.
School History:

History of JMA

Jean Massieu Academy (JMA) is an open-enrollment charter school originally founded in 1999 to serve deaf, hard of hearing, their siblings, and peers. The Academy is unique in that instruction is provided in both English and American Sign Language (ASL). This bilingual environment removes communication barriers that normally exist for deaf and hard of hearing students within the traditional public school systems as well as providing acquisition of ASL for our hearing students.

JMA believes that our bilingual communication environment has greatly enhanced student academic performance. Our deaf students benefit from exposure to the professional deaf adult role models on our instructional staff, while all students benefit from the highly qualified staff, small class sizes, and caring atmosphere at the Academy. This is clearly evidenced by students "can-do" attitude, pride in achievements, and academic success.

Our rating with the Texas Education Agency is Academically Acceptable.
