Mission Statement: Embracing the Quaker values of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community and Equality, Westbury Friends School
• guides students through an academically challenging curriculum toward a lifelong love of learning.
• inspires students to recognize and appreciate their individual gifts and those of others.
• provides students with the tools to live peacefully in a diverse world in the manner of friends.
Philosophy/Belief Statement:
Westbury Friends School takes a whole-child approach toward education. We recognize that there are many dimensions to each of our students. We seek to care for the spirit as well as the mind; we encourage social growth as well as physical development. Westbury Friends School aims to instill in each of our students a high level of respect for others while inspiring a love of learning.
At WFS, we believe that the children are the heart of the school. Education occurs not only in the classroom, but throughout all areas of the school and throughout the day. We aim to foster independent learners; children capable of recognizing strengths in themselves and others, accepting and working through challenges and appreciating opportunities for learning.
School History: Westbury Friends School is a culturally diverse Quaker school in the heart of Nassau County. It was founded in 1957 by the members of the Westbury Monthly Meeting under whose care the school still exists. The school opened with 16 children, including four from Quaker families. In its earliest years, classes were held in the two buildings that are now known as the Orthodox Building and the Center. Over the past 50 years, additional classrooms were added, as well as a beautiful Library/Media Center, in order to meet the needs of the larger community which it now serves. Children from over 40 surrounding communities come to Westbury Friends School because of the strong educational program that the school provides, the deep sense of community that exists, and because of the Quaker values that are woven into the very fabric of the learning community.
Westbury Friends School is a not-for-profit educational corporation, chartered by the New York State Board of Regents. It is a part of the New York State Association of Independent Schools and has been accredited by them as well, through a peer review system. WFS is also a member of the Friends Council on Education, which provide professional development, publications, consulting and other resources to keep Friends schools connected to each other and to their missions.
