Mission Statement:
Our goal is to reduce food insecurity while instilling environmental education in our students.
Philosophy/Belief Statement:
We believe that students benefit from spending time outdoors working in the garden and walking on the nature trail. Benefits include improved attention span, self esteem, science knowledge and nutrition. We also believe that families will improve their home nutrition if provided with incentives to start home gardens. Our garden seeks to build community and volunteerism with both our Spanish and non-Spanish parents since our school is a dual language school.
Program History:
Our school garden program began when a major employer in town closed leaving many parents out of work. We provided seeds and container garden workshops for families. Our first Latin American project was a Monarch butterfly habitat. The student and parents enjoyed watching the Monarchs fly south and some parents remembered the Monarchs coming through their villages in Mexico. We have since developed Junior Master Garden Clubs where the students improve their teamwork and science knowledge.
Volunteer Participation: Students, parents and staff are out primary volunteers.
Program Information:
We had to completely rebuild our graden in 2011 due to a mobile classroom being placed on the original site.
