Curriculum:

AAST Students are able to take courses in all academic disciplines at the college-prep through Advance Placement and dual enrollment college courses. The STEM studies program allows students entering the 9th grade to accelerate their course work in Math and Science based individual desire and aptitude. The career majors program consists of seven majors which include, Advanced Art, Theatre, Digital Communications, Entertainment Technology, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Engineering, and Computer Science . Four of the career majors are encompassed under the STEM program of study; however, AAST’s program design recognizes that students’ interests in STEM areas are greatly enhanced when they are offered the opportunity to explore arts and humanities electives to support their interest in pursuing careers in STEM/STEAM innovation. They embrace the concept that discovery is part of the process of science and that invention and creativity are required for innovation to occur.

School Performance: AAST is a high performing school. In 2014-15 year-end reporting, AAST had 100% passage rate for the state End-of Course testing for ( English, Algebra, Biology) and 95% in US History. SAT average of 1607 on the three part test ( top 6 in the state); ACT average of 23.7. The AP course pass rate was 87% overall with 12 AP courses. In 2015-16 the school offers 13 AP courses.

Computer Capabilities:

AAST is a technology rich environment with a 1:1 personalized learning device program using the Dell Venue. AAST's Career and Technology (CATE)Programs are supported through Federal Perkins grant to maintain industry current technology in the 5 CATE majors ( Computer Science, Entertainment Technology, Digital Arts & Web Communications, Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medicine). Additional corporate sponsored technology is integraed throughout the school for students use. The media center offers a "Maker Space" with a Glow forge, a 3-D Printer, and a technology lab with design software available to students.

School Championships:

AAST is a program school ( Magnet School format) and student represent 10 base high schools. The base schools have athletic teams. AAST has won many school championships in the FIRST Robotics competitions team #1287 Aluminum Assault ( Winning alliance team in 2015 North Carolina Regional), Corporate sponsored competitions such as the Verizon App Challenge ( state winning teams in 2014 & 2015), Technology Students Association (TSA) competitions, local and state Theatre and Visual Arts competitions, and a myriad of other state and national competitions have been won by individual students.
