Philosophy/Belief Statement:

The Books for All Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing unique educational programs and resources that raise awareness about the need for published materials that are accessible to children with special needs. We believe that literacy for all children can be increased if a large number of truly independent titles are made available for children to practice the skills of reading. We are committed to creating and publishing accessible reading materials that support our purpose while encouraging young readers to pursue and enjoy independent reading. We are committed to providing well-written, richly illustrated books in a variety of accessible formats to meet the needs of children with varied disabilities.

Program History:

The Books for All story begins with a shared commitment. Bonnie Reber, a former teacher and the parent of a daughter, Grace, with Down Syndrome, and Stacey Adams, Grace’s special education teacher, felt there was a void in reading education for children with varied disabilities. Bonnie and Stacey, like many, met with an ongoing struggle to find quality reading materials designed to meet the challenges faced by children with disabilities. There are currently very few children’s books published with consideration given to specialized formatting designed to make books truly accessible for a broad audience. Bonnie and Stacey agreed that an organization was needed that would educate about the significant need for quality, accessible books and that this same organization should publish those books serving as a unique model in the publishing industry. With a shared commitment, the Books for All Foundation was established.

Events:

Books for All Foundation publishes their own specially formatted titles and makes those titles available in various formats to meet the various needs of students with disabilities or low reading skills. They have also created teacher resource guides and student take-home kits for each of their titles. Books for All Foundation provides educational presentations to students, parents, businesses, and civic organizations on literacy, independent reading, diversity, and the need for accessible reading materials. In addition to our own titles, the Books for All Foundation donates new and gently used books to students in low socioeconomic areas.
