Philosophy/Belief Statement:
To create a community with healthy, safe, and affordable housing for all.
While Montgomery County is one of the most affluent, fastest growing communities in the nation, thousands of its residents are living in poverty. Housing costs have sky-rocked, while income growth in many jobs has remained the same - making the dream of homeownership almost impossible for low-income families. However, Habitat’s unique homeownership model provides a solution to this problem by offering low-income families the opportunity to purchase their own simple, decent, affordable home. Our goal is to end the cycle of poverty, instill a “can-do” attitude and show families that with the right tools, they can have the confidence and competence to maintain their own stable community.
Program History:
Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County (HFH-MC) was established as a private, ecumenical Christian nonprofit, organization in 1982 by a small group of dedicated volunteers looking to create homeownership opportunities for families with limited income. Their goal was to build sustainable housing and revitalize neighborhoods in Montgomery County.
Four years and hundreds of volunteers later, Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County completed its first home on Chandlee Mill Road in Sandy Spring. Since that time, HFH-MC has built or rehabilitated more than 55 homes in partnership with local families and now has a professional staff of 13 which is supplemented by AmeriCorps/VISTA members.
Additional Information:
Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland relies on the volunteer support of local individuals, businesses, civic and faith groups to help make the dream of homeownership possible for families in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties! Visit http://habitatmm.org/volunteer for more information.
Volunteering at Habitat ReStore is a great way to be involved with Habitat for Humanity. Habitat ReStore is Habitat for Humanity’s retail outlet: ReStore sells donated home furnishings and construction materials in order to raise funds for Habitat’s mission of providing affordable housing opportunities.
