Mission Statement:

Helping Enrich DC was established to provide literacy training and enhancement in various formats to the youth and adults of the District of Columbia by welcoming an opportunity to enhance their futures; by creating an atmosphere that engages learning in a hands-on, interactive environment; empowering young adults with ongoing skills necessary to successfully acquire employment that will motivate and benefit the individuals into taking responsibility for maximizing their potential; and improving the overall community with individuals that increase the sustainability of the District of Columbia.

The vision of HEDC is a "Fully Literate District" whose residents are exceptionally well prepared to exceed in education as well as compete for employment.

Philosophy/Belief Statement:

Helping Enrich DC is founded on the premise that more than any other single skill, the ability to read - fluently - allows an individual to be a successful scholar, explore the world, positively impact their community and have marketable career options.

Program History:

The EarPhone project was initially funded by Designer Rachel Roy. Due to its success in Washington, DC, the program has been requested in 19 cities across the US.

The EarPhone project is an audio-listening literacy initiative to promote independent listening, comprehension, analysis and further independent reading. Ultimately, our mission is to provide a learning tool to children and families. The EarPhone project directly aligns itself with this theme. As each student increases their reading ability, they will be encouraged to share what they have learned with other school age peers. We accept volunteers and as this program increases its successes, we will request children to utilize their voices to provide stories for adults in the future
