Jumpstart is working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.
Program History:
Since 1993, Jumpstart has trained nearly 25,000 college students and community volunteers to deliver its program to more than 100,000 preschool children nationwide.
Additional Information:
Jumpstart Community Corps is an innovative program designed to train volunteers to work with preschool children in low-income neighborhoods. Our volunteers enjoy working with young children and have a desire to give back to their community.
Jumpstart Community Corps is currently recruiting for the 2011-2012 School year! We are looking for adult volunteers to work in preschools in the Bayview and Mission neighborhoods. In the Corps Member position, volunteers will have the opportunity to serve children ages 3-5, and help them build language, literacy, and social skills. Corps members volunteer a minimum of six hours per week from January - June. Service includes sessions at the preschool site, session preparation, and pre-service and in-service training. Volunteers will be compensated for travel expenses.
Responsibilities include:
- Working on a team of 4-7 peers
- Reading to children in small groups
- Singing songs
- Reading poems
- Playing games that build literacy skills
- Leading art activities
- Meeting with fellow team mates to prepare for sessions
- Being reliable and punctual
Available volunteer hours include:
Tuesday and Thursday
9:00am-12:00pm or 2:30pm-5:30pm
Wednesday and Friday
9:00am-12:00pm or 2:30pm-5:30pm
Must be 17 and up and willing to commit January - June to apply.
