Hours of Service: winter hours: 9 AM - 1 PM; Summer hours: 9 AM - 9 PM
Minimum Hours Required: 3 - 4, but will take 2 on regular basis
Days of Service: Sunday through Sunday
Mission Statement:

A. To provide a wild animal facility for the rescue, treatment, and release of sick, injured, and orphaned native wildlife;

B. To educate the public about and to promote understanding of the local wildlife and their habitats;

C. To increase awareness of and appreciation for the value of wildlife and the environment, and to protect these natural resources.

Philosophy/Belief Statement:

You cannot help what you don't respect - so teaching about conserving our natural resources and the value of our local wildlife is essential if we want students to consider a future in helping care for wildlife. Wildlife rehabilitation is about people making a difference - one animal or bird at a time. Too many wildlife injuries are a result of interactions with people, and we teach others how to help correct and resolve the negative interactions.

Program History:

Possumwood Acres was created in 2004, and is deliberately located in a rural section of Onslow County. Although started strictly as a rehabilitation facility providing medical treatment for injured wildlife, it quickly expanded its education program. We are now considered to be a county resource for wildlife programs and presentations, and serve as an outdoor classroom to many local schools.

Events:

We are part of the S.A.T. program for senior high school students, and are on the list of approved locations for students to earn their Community Service hours for school. We mentor high school students for their Senior Projects. Possumwood Acres is also the location for the local community college wildlife training classes. Scout troops regularly come out for wildlife-related badge work activities.

Additional Information:

Families, especially the military families of Camp Lejeune, are encouraged to come out and volunteer with their children.  We have had several autistic children come out to volunteer with their parents and it has been very successful.  Activities are always available and appropriate for all age groups, limiting physical conditions, and mental disabilities.  Our focus is helping wildlife as well as encouraging students to become involved in worthwhile projects.
