CANDLE, Inc. endeavors to educate parent and child together on the issues of substance abuse by using innovative methods and
illustrating drug trends in the local community.
Philosophy/Belief Statement:
Parents (or caring adults) are the most powerful prevention tools for youth evidenced by discussion in the home and parental monitoring. Parents need to show their child they are knowledgeable on the issue before discussions will have the desired impace. Until parents are given a full view of the scope of substance abuse and understand the availability of drugs in the community, a child's peers will remain the 'experts'.
Program History:
The Reality Tour began in 2003 in Butler, PA as a comprehensive parent/child substance abuse experience. The dramatic portrayal of a teen on drugs along with coping skills and 1st person accounts was so successful, a waiting list to attend developed for this monthly program. The program has continued since that time and 20 PA counties replicate the program. The Reality Tour was researched by the University of Pittsburgh and is an evidence-based program on NREPP. Replications are occurring in other states as well.
Events:
Reality Tours throughout PA occur monthly on weeknights. Search at www.RealityTour.org for a location.
Additional Information:
Wolunteers, both youth and adult are essential to the Reality Tour presentation. If you have 1 to 3 hours to give to your local Reality Tour, you can help change lives and save lives.
If there is no Reality Tour in your community, you can volunteer to be the catalyst that brings the program to your families. In as little as 90-days you can bring the Reality Tour to life in your locale.
The non-profit CANDLE, Inc. extends an invitation to all communities to participate in or implement a Reality Tour. It can be the most important 3-hours you ever spend with your child. There are a number of sites in PA and a site will startup in Oregon in 2010.
This grassroots, consequence-driven program has received local and national awards. Every community has the resources necessary to start the program with purchase of the non-profit CANDLE, Inc.'s Reality Tour Program Model. ($3500) A PA Attorney General grant is available for eligible organizations and communities for Reality Tour startups. Inquire at CANDLE, Inc. for the application.
We simply must save our children and preserve the family. One in four American families has a member struggling with addiction.
Please visit the CANDLE website for video clips of the proram. Register to attend a free teleconferences for an overview of the program for your community.
The program is research-based and has been accepted by the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices.
