Mission Statement:

Still Someone, Inc. supports seniors' needs for dignity and comfort by distributing blankets and greeting cards to nursing home and home care patients.

Philosophy/Belief Statement:

The comfort items we hand out are unique creations made by volunteers. Each knit, woven, sewn, or crocheted piece can provide a layer of warmth in a chilly building, modesty and dignity when worn over a skimpy hospital gown, and a personal decoration to an institutional room.

Please consider supporting this mission by volunteering as a crafter, donating materials or funds, purchasing from our store, or learning more about eldercare issues. If you would like to make a donation in someone else's name, we will send a personalized thank you card to the honoree announcing the gift.

No one at Still Someone is paid for their involvement. All crafters, administrators, and distributors are volunteers.

If you have any questions, please email contact@stillsomeone.org

Program History:

When my grandmother, Virginia Elizabeth Walker, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, I felt helpless. I lived over 300 miles away and there did not seem to be anything I could do to help her on a daily basis.

Whenever I visited my grandmother, I became frustrated at how she seemed to fade more and more in the background. The room could be filled with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, but we would talk around her.

I knew that my grandmother was still someone. She deserved dignity and comfort despite her diagnosis.

One thing I found that I could do, even at a distance, was knit for my grandmother. Knitting her a lap blanket was therapeutic for me, and gave her something to wrap up in when she was chilly or self-conscious, or pick at when her hands were restless.

Still Someone was established to bring the comfort of handmade shawls, blankets, and cards to other elderly residents of nursing homes and home care programs. We recognize that no matter what obstacles the older members of our community face, each person is still someone, and deserves dignity, comfort, and support.

No one at Still Someone is paid for their involvement. All crafters, administrators, and distributors are volunteers.

Additional Information:

We need volunteers to make, sign, and hand out greeting cards for senior citizens. Volunteering with us is easy -- simply make and sign cards whenever you have a chance and mail them to our organization. We will pull your cards with cards from other volunteers and distribute them to nursing homes so that all seniors int he facility receive a card.

Please sign your card respectfully. Don't mention any illnesses you think the recipient might have or how bad you assume they are feeling. Most seniors enjoy receiving cards from kids and like to hear about your hobbies, family, and school. Seasonally and holiday cards are great, but please avoid religious cards.

We also collect handmade blankets for seniors. If you don't sew, knit, or crochet, tied fleece blankets are a warm and thoughtful alternative.

Finally, we always need volunteers to distribute cards. We provide the cards, and your family, school, or scouting organization provides the manpower and smiles.
