In U.S. the preferred term is now development delay among parents and physicians, though it does not represent a single condition. Its is considered more so a disability than it is a disease. It can distinguished in many ways from mental illness. There is no cure for the disability but with appropriate teaching and support they can learn to adapt and learn to do many things and contribute to society.
