Name: Spanish through Leadership - Nicaragua |
||||
BACKGROUND AND PHILOSOPHY An incredible life-changing experience, a greater appreciation, a new outlook these are words parents use to describe how the Spanish Through Leadership Summer Program impacted their children's lives. The program was created in 1998 with the purpose of linking high school Spanish study to the dynamics of community life in Central America. The Spanish through Leadership Program is part of the Wisconsin Public Schools International Programs and is considered to be Latin America's most authentic and empowering high school language experience. Students, enroll from across the U.S. and Canada. The program's profound connection to local school districts, families, and community youth programs makes it a "role model" for immersion programs. Students literally feel "adopted" into the local community. Whether making homemade tortillas, leading a youth soccer practice, or joining a high school dance fiesta, each day in the community reveals a new adventure. Students quickly discover that building language confidence is easy and rewarding when it is connected to a meaningful purpose. With over 60% per cent of the local population under the age of sixteen it's no wonder that the most enduring part of the trip are the friendships that continue long after summer is over. In the spirit of local community students discover that Spanish is just the beginning. They return home with more than new Spanish skills, they return with a positive vision of themselves in a changing America. |
