School History

Through the foresight and efforts of an Episcopal Bishop, the Right Reverend Elisha Smith Thomas and a group of concerned Salina , Kansas businessmen, St. Johnâ€Ts came into being. These men recognized the need for a structured educational and living environment for young boys and undertook the task of establishing a military school to be operated under church auspices.

On October 28, 1887 , The Episcopal Military Institute purchased a portion of a fertile Kansas homestead and St. Johnâ€Ts Military School was born. Instead of producing wheat, this acreage has, for more than 117 years, helped to raise young men.

Long histories of names and dates mean little. The real story of St. Johnâ€Ts Military School is told in the life histories of the thousands of Cadets who have passed through its halls and classrooms. All sections of the country and many foreign nations have been represented on the rosters throughout the years.

St. John's is also proud to host the first Boy Scout troup in the United States . Troop 1 made its home here at St. John's and we continue to be an active troup and participate in associated activites.
