Program Highlights:

CMA began in 1974 as an alternative to private lessons for younger students. The first program of its kind in Ventura county, CMA classes offer a foundational music program which features keyboards, music theory, singing, ear training, rhythm, composition, ensemble playing, recorder and guitar for students ages 3-12. The CMA program duration is between two and three and one-half years, depending on the age of the child when he or she begins. Children and their parent attend classes with the student’s age and grade peers, often forming lasting friendships. All students have a promotional recital prior to their graduation year, which concludes with a recital and trophy. Many students are encouraged to continue in the final Masters year, which also concludes with a recital and trophy. Students play solos in class every month and receive certificates at regular intervals.

Recitals: There are solos in class every month. There is a promotional recital at the end of the regular program and a graduation recital at the end of the graduation year. There is also a recital at the end of the Masters year.

The late Carole Rubottom founded Junior Music Academy in downtown Ventura, with parents learning alongside their children in a group setting. When Carole retired, her first teacher, Jan Cross, who had moved to Colorado and started Children’s Music Academy, bought Carole’s studios. In 2017, veteran CMA teacher Laura Young bought the Ventura and Westlake Village studios. Miss Laura continues to teach at the Ventura studio and is pleased to carry on the CMA tradition of “making music last a lifetime.”

Academic Teaching Experience: All of our teachers are university graduates and highly skilled teachers and musicians.

Retired Ojai Elementary music teacher, Laura Denne, has this to say about CMA. “As a private piano teacher I have seen the benefits of CMA first hand. Students who have gone through the CMA program really enjoy music. They come to lessons with a great attitude and curiosity, as well as a willingness to learn and explore all aspects of music and instruments. When a parent of a younger child comes for beginning lessons I always suggest they begin with CMA. These students return to me after graduation knowing how to read music and rhythms, but most importantly they have a comfort level that makes teaching them so much more enjoyable for us both!”

2017 Masters Graduate Timothy Pearson of Ventura states, “Some music lessons are fun. These lessons...double the fun. I love this Academy!”

“I love CMA because the program requires diligence and perseverance,” states Erica Morris, Ventura mother of two Masters Graduates, one Graduate and two current students. “My children enjoy the lessons each week, and each year they gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for music. After four years of music instruction, my children still love music, which is something I could not say about the music training I had at their age. Our whole family has been blessed by the CMA program. It is true that you have helped the love of music last a lifetime, and I deeply thank you for that gift!”
