History:

Adventure Theatre, founded in 1951, is the longest-running theatre program for children and families in the Washington metropolitan area and has been one of the main attractions at Glen Echo Park since 1971.

Program Highlights:

Theatre! We are offering the most exciting and popular courses from previous seasons (Adventures in Theatre, Light Saber Adventures, etc.) and introducing a whole new line-up of PlayLabs and Classes, suited precisely to your child’s abilities, skill level and interests.

Conductor Voyage’s Magical Carpet Ride
Wednesdays 1:45pm - 2:30pm
Ages 3-5
Join Conductor Voyage as she takes your preschooler on all kinds of wonderful adventures via her Magical Carpet! Journey to a Lost City, holiday with Dinosaurs, take passage on a mystical ship, visit outer space, wander the woods with a Fairie Queen and cruise under the sea with Mermaids …the world is your child’s oyster and their imagination will guide the way in this exploratory creative drama PlayLab!*

Pretty Princess Adventures
Saturdays 9am-9:45am
Ages 3-5
Every girl has a little princess in them! Join us each week for a creative drama class that is nothing less than sparkly and fun! Using popular princesses and heroines from children’s literature like Tinkerbell, Snow White, Cinderella and Belle, we will explore the magical wonders of their worlds and re-create their stories through creative, guided play. Tiaras and glitter optional.

Conductor Voyage’s Magical Wardrobe
Saturdays 9am-9:45am
Ages 3-5
The Magical Wardrobe is packed to the top with all sorts of treasures your preschooler can adorn themselves in - from tiaras to cowboy hats, Conductor Voyage will tote along a new collection of costumes and props each week to foster your pre-schooler's imagination in creative dramatic play!*

Adventures in Theatre
Mondays 4pm-5pm
Ages 6-8
Take a journey through creative drama and the basics of acting, improvisation and character development through theatre games and fun acting exercises that culminates with a shared presentation for family and friends.*

LightSaber Adventures I
Wednesdays 4:00pm-5:00pm
Ages 6-8
Learn to safely weild a LightSaber. This class will teach lessons in safety, focus, spatial awareness, teamwork and self-discipline all within a safe framework of basic stage combat movement. IMPORTANT NOTE: All students will be expected to adhere to specific classroom safety guidelines.*

LightSaber Adventures II
Wednesdays 4pm-5pm
Ages 7-11
This class builds on the skills learned in LightSaber I and adds more challenging stage combat techniques. Students will apply these techniques in short scenes they create with their instructor and classmates. IMPORTANT NOTE: All students will be expected to adhere to specific classroom safety guidelines. (Prerequisite LightSaber Adventures I or by Permission of Instructor)*

Drama for a Modern Girl
Mondays 4pm-5pm
Ages 6-8
Taking a page from children’s literature, explore the lives and brave actions of some of our most beloved heroines: Harry Potter’s Hermione, American Girl’s Chrissa, A Little Princess’ Sara Crewe, Anne of Green Gables, Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, Cinderella and many more. In addition to enjoying themselves and acting out the lives of some of these well-known characters, our students will use creative drama to identify and resolve conflict in a safe environment, learn to model positive behavior in today’s world and build a personal arsenal of self-affirming life, interpersonal and confidence skills.*

Adventures in Acting
Mondays 5:15pm-6:15pm
Ages 9-12
A class for the aspiring actor. Learn and build on basic acting skills mastered through previous programs and/or on-stage experience. This class will travel through various historical styles of acting from Classical to Method, challenging students to sustain a believable character through text and scene work. *

Adventures in Improv
Tuesdays 4pm-5pm
Ages 9-12
So you think you are funny, huh? Adventure Theatre takes on the challenge of nurturing those kids who like to crack everyone up! The class will focus on long-form sketch comedy, creating an ensemble, and forming a fundamental knowledge of the basic improv skill set. *

Winter Musical Theatre Workshop: Disney's Alice in Wonderland, Jr.
Tuesdays & Thursdays 4pm-6pm
Ages 8-12
The MTW Series returns with a brand new production! Working with a professional director, musical director and choreographer, students will mount their own fully staged musical production of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Jr. IMPORTANT NOTE: Every enrolled child will receive a speaking and/or singing role in the production, however role distribution is at sole discretion of the Director. Tuition cost includes 4 tickets for one of the final performance dates: March 12 & 13 at 6 pm.

* This class is planned with a rotating curriculum so returning students will continue to be challenged.
